Below is the editorial letter from Liv Taylor and Vickie Smith, the editors of Cross County Women: A Kentucky Magazine, Volume 1. Find the full magazine below!

In the rolling hills and deep valleys of southeastern Kentucky, my sister Liv and I embarked on a remarkable initiative, aiming to amplify the voices of women whose stories have long been overlooked. We sought to celebrate the resilience, strength, and unique experiences of women throughout Appalachia.

The idea sprang from a simple yet profound realization: the women of this region, with their rich tapestry of experiences, have much to share. From the generational trauma that has shaped their lives to the everyday joys and triumphs. These stories deserve to be heard and appreciated. Liv and I understood that by creating a platform for these narratives, we could foster a sense of community and solidarity among women, while also shining a light on the diverse and vibrant culture of southeastern Kentucky.

Our project is more than just a storytelling medium; it is a network of helping hands. Each woman featured in our magazine can nominate the next, creating a continuous chain of support and recognition. This approach ensures that the voices of everyday women—those who are surviving and thriving in the face of adversity—are given the stage they deserve.

The power of this initiative lies in its inclusiveness. By inviting women from all walks of life to share their stories, Liv and I are not only preserving the rich histories of Appalachia but also empowering a new generation of women to take pride in their heritage and their personal journeys. The magazine becomes a mirror reflecting the true spirit of the region—one of unwavering resilience, unbreakable bonds, and a relentless pursuit of happiness.

In every issue, readers will find a mosaic of tales that capture the essence of life in southeastern Kentucky. From heart-wrenching accounts of overcoming generational trauma to heartwarming stories of community and kinship, the magazine promises to be a testament to the strength and grace of Appalachian women.

This vision extends beyond the pages of the magazine. We hope to inspire a movement that encourages women to lift each other up, share their experiences, and foster a supportive network that transcends geographical and social boundaries. By giving a platform to these voices, we are weaving a collective narrative that honors the past while looking forward to a brighter future.

In the heart of Appalachia, where the whispers of the past meet the aspirations of the future, Liv and I’s initiative is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring strength of women. Our magazine is not just a publication; it is a movement that celebrates life, love, and the indomitable spirit of the women of southeastern Kentucky.

Join us in this journey of discovery and celebration. Let the voices of Appalachia be heard, and let their stories inspire and uplift us all.
